Sekanjabin- Lemonbalm and Mint Oxymel

An ancient persion sweet and sour iced drink, Sekanjabin is one of the oldest known syrup drinks and serves as a digestive aid


There are many sekanjabin recipes buit this one harnesses the calming and sedative elements of Lemonnbalm and the deliceous digestive element of mint. Its cooling and truly refresshing and the oxymel also purported to have some weightloss benefits.


An oxymel is a medicinal herbal drink with a vinegar and honey extraction base. The term oxymel is greek and means "acidic- honey". The father of medicine Hippocrates was well known to prescribe these four nourishing and invigorating the body. Its popularity in greece soon spread to the Middle East and Europe where new native herbs were incorporated into the mixture.

How to make this Oxymel

Ingredients

  • 3 parts honey

  • 2 parts water

  • 1 part cider vinegar

  • Juice of half a lemon

  • Handful of lemonbalm leaves

  • Handful of fresh mint leaves

Method

  1. Fill a Large mason jar with the fresh Lemon Balm and Mint, be sure to pack loosly

  2. In a seperate bowl mix the honey, vinegar water and lemon together until a smooth consistancy is reached

  3. Pour the liquid over the leaves and put the lid on the large mason jar

  4. Leave in a cool dry place for 1-2 weeks then strain and put into seperate jars and store for upto 6 months


To serve put an almond in the bottle of a wine glass and pur in 3 tbsp of the Sekanjabin and add ice and filtered water. Sip and enjoy
