Elderberry Syrup for children

If you are lucky enough to live near an elderberry tree and are interested in wild crafting a wonderfull cold and virus remedy that is safe for your children and sugar free this recipe could be for you!



Elderberry syrup from the precious Sambuccus nigra tree has been proven active against many viruses including Influenza. They are naturally sweet and delicious and its a natural medicine your kids will love. They can lessen the length and symptoms of a cold or flu and have the added benefit of being high in anti oxidants and antiinflamatory and protective of the heart and skin.

For this recipe we will be using vegetable glycerine making this remedy have the name of a glycetract and it will have an estimated shelf life of 1-2 years.


Vegetable glycerine is naturally sweet and so will apeal to children. Glycerine is safe for diabetics too as it converts to glycogen not glucose when ingested so will not cause unnecessary blood sugar spikes. It is an excellent base for herbal extracts as it does not use alchohol so it is also perfect for those who wish to take herbal extracts who are concerned about liver health. Vegetable glycerine is readily available at most herbal stores however this one we have found to be the best source.


Elderberries are native to the UK and ripen between September and October. Remeber to only harvest ripe berries for medicine making. you will need a pair of scissors to cut the off the tree and a basket or container to put the ripe berries into.





 

How to Make Elderberry Syrup

Ingredients

  • 300g Elderberries

  • 300 ml Glycerine

Method

  1. put the berries in a blender and blend until smooth

  2. transfer the berries to a large mason jar with a lid and add the vegetable glycerine

  3. stir untill fully mixed then close the lid

  4. allow the tincture to fully macerate in a cool dry place for 7-14 days

  5. Strain the mixture with a siv and put into bottles and label

  6. 1 dose is 1 tbsp once per day as a preventative or 2 tbsp per day to reduce symptoms
